We Are Lost in the Noise

We want to believe that we can make a difference.  The most epic stories live on that hope.  We want to see a nobody become a hero and triumph over evil against all odds.  But we live in a world filled with seven billion people.  One person can’t move the Earth.  The world is too big, and they are so small. Initial Impressions of the Canon 5D Mark III (Plus Samples)

Today I received my Canon 5D Mark III in the mail. It is a camera I’ve been looking forward to for a long time, leaving me wondering whether it would live up to all the hype and anticipation. I’ve only used it initially, but here are some thoughts so far. Also, if you’re looking for samples I’ve posted a few at the end. Continue reading »

Waves, the Former Kings of Crappy Copy Protection, Actually Takes a Step in the Right Direction

Hell had a light dusting of snow today when Waves released Version 9 of their plug-ins with limited copy protection that DOES NOT require a piece of hardware to operate (but can if you somehow like that). I was seriously going to write about how they’re the epitome of terrible copy protection tomorrow. Instead, I want to give them a pat on the back for doing the right thing. Now they just need to stop sucking excessive amounts of money from us with their Waves Update plan (which varies from reasonable to ridiculous depending on what plug-ins you own) and we’ll be in good shape. (I also need to see how easy this activation process really is.) But Waves, you are off my shit list for now.

We Are the Problem with Apple

I think the Mac App Store is great.  I might go so far as to say that, as a consumer, I love it.  When I buy an app, I know it’s going to run on any of my computers without the trouble of even entering a serial number.  It gives developers a great distribution platform for Mac users.  The storefront provides a means of discovering great new apps.  Prices on the Mac App Store are almost always reasonable, and sometimes downright cheap.  These upsides are so attractive that we, the consumers, tend to forget that more exists outside of what Apple shows us.  That may be what Apple wants, but it’s our fault when we narrowly follow their vision.

Samsung's New Memory Cards are Fast and Ultra-Durable

I love SD cards of all forms.  They’re tiny little disks that most computers can read and they’re the memory of choice for the majority of cameras–even a lot of DSLRs.  To help prevent data corruption, Samsung made these new SDHC cards out of metal.  You can get them in 8GB and 16GB capacities, and they read and write at Class 10 speeds.
